What is Emotional Wellbeing?

There are six dimensions to maintaining wellness. Emotional wellbeing focuses on developing and maintaining your emotional health, building your inner calm, relaxation abilities and inner strength. Having healing emotional wellbeing can effect all of the other dimensions of wellness, but it is often over looked, especially in our fast paced and highly stimulated society. But in my opinion it is something we should all set time to work on. Working on my emotional health was my personal starting point to restoring my overall wellbeing, peace by piece as my emotional wellbeing improved I was able to find the motivation and abilities to improve all dimensions of my wellness.

How does Emotional Wellbeing impact the other 5 dimensions of wellness?

Occupational Wellness. Whether your occupational wellness is coming from your day job or a separate sense of purpose, even the most fulfilling roles can become stressful when your not looking after your emotional wellness. Poor emotional wellness can lead to conditions such as anxiety and depression, which can drain any sense of satisfaction out of your life purpose. (these two balance each other well, a sense of purpose can lift your emotional wellness, and good emotional wellness can make your occupational wellness more satisfying)

Physical Wellness. Good emotional wellness can keep you motivated to look after yourself physically, both through eating healthily and through finding joy in movement. Good emotional health can help your detach from unhealthy emotions surrounding food, such as disordered eating and develop new healthy ones. It also works the other way around too, food you eat can effect your brain chemistry and in turn your emotional wellness. Regular exercise also changes your brain chemistry to help boost your mood, and many find the act of exercise helps them to process negative emotions more effectively

Social Wellness. Understanding your emotions make your more empathetic, and being able to communicate your emotions effectively also helps your interpersonal relationships: how many times have you had an argument where one side feel the other doesn’t understand what they are trying to say? Not forgetting to mention that mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression can lead to self isolation and cutting off relationships! Good social wellness also leads to improved self-esteem, as much as some of us would like to pretend we don’t care what our peers think of us, to an extent we always will, its hard wired into us.

Intellectual Wellness. As intellectual beings we need to be continually learning, and this is much easier to do when we aren’t battling stress and anxiety. Intellectual wellness give us a boost of self-esteem, it provides us with fulfilment, we need constant progression. However this is harder to do when our head is somewhere else, or just doesn’t have the self belief to start in the first place. These can work together to balance each other out in little baby steps.

Spiritual Wellness. Extremely poor emotional wellness can damage our faith. it can make us feel alone and at war with the world. It can be a very dark place, but it can also be the place some people need to be to find higher spiritual and emotional wellness.

How do we improve Emotional Wellness?

Improving emotional wellness is a big question, as it all depends on where you are on your emotional journey. Those with mental health conditions please seek out professional help, even if you have tried before and found ‘its just not for me’ try again, keep trying until you find a psychiatric team that does work for you. However I will say, from personal experience, no matter where you are in your emotional wellness journey, it takes work, and dedication: but your happiness should is always worth that. Now if you are receiving professional treatment and want something a little bit more to increase your wellbeing journey OR you have mild anxiety or depression OR you just feel you need to improve or maintain your emotional wellness this page is where I post everything I do to maintain my emotional wellbeing and intern my overall wellness. My personal wellbeing journey has largely involved mindfulness practices, various forms of CBT therapy, mediations and other spiritual practices, journaling and gratitude practices.
